Technique instruction
Physical vapor deposition (PVD) describes a variety of vacuum deposition methods which can be used to produce thin films and coatings. PVD is characterized by a process in which the material goes from a condensed phase to a vapor phase and then back to a thin film condensed phase. The most common PVD processes are sputtering and evaporation.
Machines and Samples
Vacuum Chamber:
Chamber cover can be disassemble and has a workpiece jig on it. There is a front door on chamber for loading and unloading of workpieces. There is one or two observation ports on the door.
The chamber body and front door are whole water jacket structured and made of stainless steel.
There is a square-shaped flange hole for connection with vacuum system. On barrel bottom,
there are several flanges: one for installation of heater, one for gas supply and the other one for thermocouple.
- Arc deposition:
This is a high temperature PVD process. It works with gases and you can apply both of decorative and functional coatings on the materials which can bear high temperature, such as: ceramic, glass, metals.

Cycle time: From 20 min to hours, according to the processes
Main Coatings: TiN, CrN, TiAlN, AlTiN, TICN and other metal coatings
- Magnetron sputtering:
Room temperature PVD process. It works with gases. Generally used for mirror making, reflective glass making, solar collection tubes, ITO glass, food grade plastic tableware, plastic decorations, toys
Cycle time: From 15 min to 35 min, depending on the processes
Main Coatings: Cr, TiN, TiO, ITO coatings and other metal coatings
FAQ About PVD
What materials can be coated?
PVD can be applied directly to stainless steel. The most common applications are chrome plated zinc, brass, steel, aluminum and ABS plastic.
What surface finish do we require?
The PVD coating follows the contours of the surface, so if you coat a polished surfaces you will have a polished PVD finish or if you coat satin, matte or brushed surfaces you will get PVD satin. matte or brushed finish. PVD does not level or fill like traditional electroplating, so surface imperfections that are visible prior to PVD coating are still visible after coating — and in many cases magnified
What is the thickness of the PVD coating?
Depending on the application (Functional or Decorative) the thickness range is 0.30 to 1.0 micron for Decorative and 2.0 – 5.0 microns for Functional.
How hard is the coating?
Again, depending on the application, this can range from 2000 to 3500 HV or approximately 70-80 HRc.
What is the Coefficient of Friction?
The average is 0.15.
What is the process temperature?
Depending on the substrate material, coating thickness and application, it can range from 100 F to 350 F.
What is the corrosion resistance?
The industry standard for chrome-plated brass is 1000 hours neutral salt fog or 100 to 150 hours CASS.
What colors are available?
The range of colors includes Brass tones, Gold Tones, Black to Gray, Silver, Copper, Rainbows & Bronze Tones. We also pioneered PVD antique finishes like Oil Rubbed Bronze.
For pre-treatment on the metal parts:
1. Ultrasonic washing machine
2. Pure water machine, 1 ton/hour
3. The surface of the substrates(the products) should be clean, dry, so you will need an oven

Question 3: What do I have to do for my products before processing by the vacuum coater?
Answer: In vacuum area, the products(we call it"substrate") have to be CLEAN, DRY AND SMOOTH. So we will need washer and dryer, sometimes base varnish, and topcoat to protect the coatings.
Question 4: Do I have to pay the costs for pollution?
Answer: The machine is environment-friendly, there is no liquid chemical waste and harmful gas. This is a kind of green technology.

1.We will response within 24 hours after the buyer's formal Technical Support Reprt.
2. After the buyer receives the formal Finishing Inspection Report from seller, the buyer should inspect the machine in site within 7 days. After inspection approval,the buyer should pay the balance before shipment.
3.12 months' warranty and the whole machine life maintenance.(Charged during the warranty due to human's damage or wrong operation).
Sellers provide Customer Files for maintenance and repairing service.
Sellers should provide the spare parts to buyer during the equipment's life time as requested.
